Annotations for Something Human

Lyric: Let’s burn all the money
Annotation:
This refers back to the roots of Muse, eg 2nd Law and Animals era, of the money free, anti capitalist roots that strive to be unearthed within the meta of Muse. It also suggests that, by having all the money, it blow up life and makes society less free. xx

Lyric: I’m about to break through
Annotation:
He has gone through an enlightenment, has realised his big truths.

Lyric: The big picture’s gone
Annotation:
No longer does Matt see the world as a whole, now he just sees his something human. He NEEDS his something human.

Lyric: Replaced with visions of you
Annotation:
Now all he wants is his something human, and that’s all he is able to think about.

Lyric: And all I have shared, and all I have loved
 Is all I’ll ever own
Annotation:
This means that Matt has nothing more to give, than his love and everything he has ever told people. All he is now is his own emotions, and his soul. He is no longer a machine, now he is becoming human, and needs love.

Lyric: I know it’s self-imposed
Annotation:
This lyric is significant in setting the tune of Something Human, as here, Matt consolidates the point that, although he is the reason for his own destruction, he recognizes this, and is aware of his issue. By self-imposed, Matt means that he has caused his circuits to blow, and has cheated the simulation, a recurring thee throughout Simulation Theory. The concept of this album is that we are all simulations, and so in this song, Matt yearns to once more, be touched by humanity, and no longer kept in the dark about his conditioning.

Lyric: I’ll depressurize
Annotation:
Again, depressurize is reminiscent of machines linking to the Drones tour. It could also be a reference to one of the previous songs, “ Pressure”. Here he is saying that he’ll relax.

Lyric: My circuits have blown
Annotation:
Bellamy starts the song by saying he is exhausted. The term to circuits is reminiscent of machinery, possibly in reference to the Drones album as Bellamy wrote this song whilst on the Drones tour.

Lyric: Ten thousand miles left on the road
Five-hundred hours ’til I am home
Annotation:
The distance between the US and Europe is ten thousand miles and it took five hundred hours of traveling for the band to reach their different destinations, where their tour took place (June 3rd-25th 2016). Muse posted a photo on Instagram, briefly explaining the lyrics.

Lyric: And something human, human
Annotation:
‘And’ perhaps suggests that the love he is talking about is something better than ‘human’, or, more likely, he’s needing all the little things that come along with love after being on the road for so long.

Lyric: And I need your love
Annotation:
It could be that the “Something Human” that Matt Bellamy wants is actually human love. This lyric is somewhat reminiscent of verse 3 in Muse’s Madness where Bellamy sings “I need your love”.
